About Capybara

The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the world's largest rodent, native to South America. These social animals are often found in groups near bodies of water, where they spend much of their time. Their semi-aquatic lifestyle is supported by webbed feet and the ability to hold their breath for up to five minutes. Capybaras are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses and aquatic plants. They are known for their calm disposition and often coexist peacefully with other animals, even allowing birds to perch on their backs. Capybaras play an important role in their ecosystems and are increasingly popular in zoological collections and sometimes even kept as exotic pets.

Size Overview

The capybara, a fascinating member of the rodent family, is a semi-aquatic mammal renowned for its gentle nature and impressive size. Reaching dimensions of approximately 1200mm in width, 550mm in height, and 1200mm in length, a full-grown capybara is about the size of a medium-sized dog, such as a Labrador Retriever. In centimeters, this translates to 120cm wide and 55cm tall. While not something you could hold in the palm of your hand, they are relatively compact, making them surprisingly agile both in and out of water. This Capybara size comparison highlights their unique place in the animal kingdom. Understanding Capybara dimensions helps appreciate their ecology.
